Welcome To My City!

Whenever I travel somewhere new, I like to document the things I saw, the things I love, the places I recommend going, etc. This spring, someone recommended to me that I should document those same things about the city I call home, Richmond, VA. What a great idea?! So today I’m sharing my 48 hours in Richmond guide. Get ready for a weekend of all of my favorite things in this amazing city.

Friday

Where To Stay

I recommend staying at the loveliest hotel in RVA, the Quirk Hotel. It’s located downtown & has a beautiful aesthetic with pink as their primary color. The lobby has incredible high arched ceilings & beautiful furnishings including their iconic pink velvet couch.

Grab A Quick Snack

After arriving in Richmond after your trip, I would stop by Lift Coffee Shop & Cafe for a quick bite to eat. They have great coffee & sandwiches, but my favorite thing to order is their peanut butter & banana smoothie. I typically don’t go for this kind of smoothie, but their’s is just so good. Richmond is also know for it’s many murals & Lift has a very fitting mural of a pair of wings right outside, perfect for a good photo opt.

Check Out The Neighborhood

Next, you might want to stretch your legs a bit & take a stroll around the neighborhood. Right down the street from the hotel, are a few really cute shops you could visit. Mod & Soul has some really cool, very Richmond style pieces including clothes, candles, little bits & bobs all at affordable prices. Then right next door is the dreamiest little store called Verdalina, which has stunning garments, accessories, & beauty products that are super high quality at a more luxury price. Perfect to find a great keepsake to remember your trip by.

If these shops are a bit too feminine if you’re traveling with mixed company, there is a great little bookstore across the street, a men’s store called Ledbury, & a great ice cream shop called Charm School.

In The Evening

Richmond is such a foodie city, & there are countless amazing restaurants available for you to try. (see my full favorites list below) One of my very favorite restaurants downtown would have to be Wong Gonzalez. This is an Asian/Mexican fusion restaurant that just gets it so right. For appetizers, I love the tequila shrimp & the fiesta bites & my go-to entree is the Gonzi’s Stir Fry Skillet. Ben also really loves the Asian BBQ Pork Tacos. Fun fact: there is a special events room upstairs called Beauty & Grace, & there is a life-size picture of me on the wall!

Don’t let the fun stop after dinner! Grab a fun cocktail either at Quirk’s scenic rooftop bar or head over to Switch, Richmond’s newest pop-up bar. This place is so cool because it completely changes themes every 6-8 weeks. When I went recently, the top floor was Alice & Wonderland themed & then once you “go down the rabbit hole”, the downstairs took you back in time to the 90s. They have delicious specialty cocktails that carry out the theme of the room you’re in. A super cool spot & you never know what you’re gonna walk into.

Time For Breakfast

My all time favorite spot for breakfast in this city is Can Can Brasserie. When our families come into town, they cannot go home without a visit to Can Can because of it’s authentic Parisian atmosphere. When you walk inside, you truly feel like you could be in Paris! I love going during their coffee house hours for delicious pastries & amazing coffee.

After breakfast, I recommend taking a stroll down Carytown. This is a favorite spot to visit in Richmond because of it’s cute shops & restaurants. Some of my favorite shops in Carytown include, Mongrel – the perfect place to find a gift for ANYONE!, Bygones – a vintage store with fabulous dresses & accessories (you’ll want everything!), Sugar + Twine – a great spot for a mid-day coffee pick me up (don’t leave without trying their cheddar biscuits!), Creme de la Creme – they have beautiful dishes, candles, party goods, & home decor that are all swoon worthy, & Ginger Thai – my favorite Thai food in the city.

Next, Choose An Afternoon Activity

Option 1

Head over to the Museum District & check out the Virginia Museum Of Fine Arts. This museum is really top notch with incredible exhibits inside, a great cafe, & stunning gardens outside. One of my favorite spots to come to get inspired & feel that sense of awe when looking at truly magnificent art.

After going through the museum, take a bit of time to stroll down the streets in the Fan District. The houses are so quaint & colorful & each have their own unique personality.

Option 2

Head over to the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens & prepare yourself for jaw dropping blooms! I recently posted about my latest visit where I finally got to see their butterflies LIVE! exhibit. Truly a magical experience. See that post here.

Option 3

Visit Maymont Park! This is one of my favorite locations for photoshoots because you truly feel like you are not in the city anymore. The gardens & the landscaping are just incredible. Walk through the Italian gardens, then through the Japanese gardens & find yourself perfectly at peace in this tranquil space. If the weather is nice, pack a lunch & have a picnic under the huge trees or inside one of the many gazebos on site.

Dinner

Eat dinner in The Fan tonight. Try Kuba Kuba for amazing Cuban style food (Everyone here loves that place! Don’t forget to try their fried plantains!), or Beauvine Burger Concept for a fun atmosphere, great burgers, & I highly recommend their frosé which has elderflower liquor in it.

Craving Dessert?

If you are a cake lover, or even a wine lover, you should go to Shyndigz. This place sells the best cake in the city & you can order it by the slice! Such a cute spot & very Instagram worthy.

Breakfast

Let’s head in a different direction this time & go to Hot Diggity Donuts. This place is small but the service is great & the donuts are made right in front of you when you order them. They are served hot & every single flavor is a win! I recommend trying their cappuccinos as well. They are perfectly petite as they should be.

One Last Thing

Before heading back home, you cannot leave the River City without visiting the James River! I suggest heading towards Brown’s Island & explore the area by this majestic river. There is also a bridge you can walk across the entire river, or at least half-way to get a great photo.

Beauty Seeking!

Lately, I’ve been craving some beautiful & inspiring scenery. Traveling can be so life-giving, & since I’m staying in Richmond this summer, I’ve been determined to find that same feeling right here at home. There are so many beautiful things that surround us daily & I feel so lucky to live in such a cool city. But regardless of where we live, I’ll bet that if we make it our mission to open our eyes to seek the beauty around us, we just might find it. First stop, visiting a butterfly garden!

Our Day Date

When it comes to exploring new places, my favorite travel companion is of course, Ben. Luckily, he had a day off when it wasn’t too terribly hot & it wasn’t raining, so we took a day date to the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. Our first priority on this trip was to see their “Butterflies LIVE” exhibit, but we also spent hours roaming through the colorful & incredible gardens.

The butterfly garden was totally magical! I saw some of the biggest & brightly colored butterflies I have ever seen. Occasionally, they would land on us which was just one of the coolest things ever! We just stood there, watching, in complete awe of these whimsical creatures flying about, eating, & exploring the garden around them. I was giddy! Since around April I had been wanting to come & experience this place, & it exceeded my expectations for sure.

Dressed For The Occasion

Chicwish very kindly gifted me this dress (which I picked out) & even before receiving it, I knew this was the dress I wanted to wear upon visiting the butterfly garden. It was even better in person & I fell in love (see my initial try on here). The whimsical botanical print is to die for along with the sweet buttons & feminine ruffles, this dress is too cute for words. These earrings matched this dress PERFECTLY!

I decided to go all out with the prints to carry on with my whimsical theme. This cute polka dot scarf tied in a bow on a floral bag…because sometimes more is more!

Halfway through our day trip, Ben & I sat on a bench & we realized that our looks were totally coordinated & were on theme with our surroundings! No doubt, he’s the man of my dreams!

Cones, Prints, & Red Lips

Hello, July!

Summer is in full swing & it’s hot, hot, hot! If you’re like me, you’re reaching for those easy, breezy pieces to wear & eating plenty of ice cream to keep cool. Plus, the 4th of July is THIS week! I thought I would share with you what I’m wearing this year to celebrate. I also posted my Red, White, & Blue Favorites recently, so make sure you check that out if you need more festive outfit inspiration.

The Dress

This tie sleeve, button front midi dress in red check is literally my 4th of July dress of dreams. It’s made of cotton, making it super breathable & perfect to wear on hot summer days. Not to mention, it’s on sale & comes in 7 different colors & patterns. The only thing I would say about this dress is that the top is a bit snug. I would consider sizing up.

How cute does this vintage looking bow look with this dress? I love the subtle print mixing to create that bit of intrigue in the outfit.

Keeping It Cool

Ice cream is definitely my favorite way to keep cool during the summer months. If you live in Richmond, you have to head to Scoop for some of the best ice cream in the city. I got a double scoop cone with strawberry & sweet basil with was such a delicious combo. The basil took me right back to all the fresh basil we ate while in Italy.

I will say, eating an ice cream cone with a bold red lipstick was a bit challenging, but it was so worth it! How can you not wear red lipstick on the 4th of July?! I’m wearing my favorite red, So Marylin by Charlotte Tilbury, which is my perfect true red.

Wait…I’m Wearing Jeans?!

I know, I know…this is not my typical dress or skirt or even trouser look, but I’ve fallen hard for this pair of super affordable denim culottes. They are basically the flowing midi skirt version of jeans. If you, like me, are a lover of feminine fashion & anything with a bit of drama, I’m sure you’ll fall in love with these too. Especially after reading my full review of the jeans of the season, below…

Not My First

Believe it or not, this blue denim pair of culottes was not my first, but my second pair to purchase. My first pair was a beautiful white denim pair which I wore on my girl’s trip to Charleston earlier this month. I’ve worn both pairs several times already this month, & I know they will be among my best purchases of the spring season.

The Fit

You may think this shape would be a bit unflattering, but let me tell exactly why that’s not true. First of all, these pants are very high waisted. This is one of the very best features about these pants in my opinion because it cinches you in at the most ideal place to create that figure flattering silhouette. These jeans will go perfectly with my spring/summer shirts that are a bit more cropped as well as more flowy & billowing tops that I can wear tucked in. Then the cropped wide leg makes your ankles look skinny & then draws your focus back up to that cinched in waist line.

But Wait, There’s More

You guys, these pants are such a steal! At only $30, your spring wardrobe needs a pair. (Or if you’re like me, you might need two!) They’re flattering, affordable, & oh-so comfortable. I would even travel in them, they’re so comfortable. With so many brands out there coming out with their own version of these pants, I had to let you all know that these are the very best.

Even More Beautiful Than I’d Imagined

Before visiting Charleston, I thought it would be a beautiful city based on the photos I had seen from other Charleston based bloggers. Let me just say, it’s even more beautiful than I had imagined it to be. It’s so clear that the owners of each home take pride in the care & look of their property & gardens. Just visiting this city has inspired me to step up my game, put in the work, & take pride in my home. In this post I want to share with you all the spaces that gave me major home & garden inspiration in Charleston which I plan on bringing to my home.

Home Inspiration

Each home in this charming city had its own unique color palette. The houses were painted most commonly in dreamy pastels with doors & shutters painted in colors to perfectly compliment it. There were interesting windows, impressive porches or piazzas – what native Charleston people like to call them, & gardens instead of yards. Each home told a story & had a personality of its own.

This got me thinking. What story does my home tell? Does it give a good & lasting impression? Is it warm & inviting? This year, I want to write a story for my home by putting in work to then let the house do the talking. The colors, the textures, the right amount of whimsy & structure, the sweet city of Charleston has totally inspired me to incorporate these lovely traits into my home right here in RVA.

In The Garden

I could talk about the gardens in Charleston for days! What a dream! You can tell how much thought & care goes into each home’s personal garden. First of all, the window boxes were to die for. They were bursting with the most stunning blooms, in colors that complimented the vibe of the house. I also fell in love with the way they used vines to line steps, grow in a pattern to decorate the side of a house, or to add the perfect amount of texture to a home, making it feel alive. Another garden detail I loved was their use of pots. We saw this when we were on our honeymoon in Italy (see here: 1/2/3), but the way they group pots together & use them to fill & decorate every space is just beautiful. I already know this will be an obsession of mine this season!

Dream Big

Being the dreamer that I am, I’ve recently dreamed some big dreams for our home garden (thanks to Monty Don!). I would love to have an arch of climbing roses to dress our front door & flowers in bloom during each season around the property. Another goal I have for our garden is to create a cozy space for us to sit outside & enjoy the nice weather. How lovely would it be to have a couch outside for Ben & I to cuddle up on or to entertain guest with? I also have a dream to build a back porch (or piazza) under a pergola someday.

One final garden dream I have is to have a garden full of blooms, kind of like a small scale farm. I would not only fill my home with the blooms, but give them to friends & put together flower arrangements either for a side gig or just for fun. Flowers just make me so happy.

What home & garden dreams do you have?

Our Valentine's Day + Celebrating 6 Months Of Marriage

My Forever Valentine

This is our fourth Valentine’s Day together, but this year is the most special of them all. We are officially a family now & since our wedding, our love has only grown. (As cheesy as it sounds…it’s true!) Ben & I wanted to do something special together to celebrate our first married Valentine’s Day, but we had to do it a little bit early this year. I will be performing tonight & the rest of the weekend, so Ben had the great idea of visiting the beautiful Agecroft Hall last weekend. Neither of us had ever been, so we slept in, had cinnamon rolls & coffee, then left at noon to arrive right when the gates opened.

Agecroft Hall

Agecroft Hall is a lovely, Tudor manor house right on the James River located just minutes from our house. Believe it or not, this home was built in the late 15th century in Lancashire, England. Then in the early 20th century it was deconstructed, shipped overseas, & rebuilt. This place is incredible. The details, paintings, elaborate beds & ceilings were magnificent. Not to mention the masterfully laid out gardens. Needless to say, we cannot wait to go back in the spring & summer when the gardens are in full bloom. I hear that in the summer, the also have live Shakespeare performances outside! We had a lovely afternoon on this amazing property & cannot wait to go back.

Our Valentine's Day + Celebrating 6 Months Of Marriage

Our First 6 Months

Ben & I recently celebrated our 6 month wedding anniversary. Since our magical wedding day, we’ve travelled to Italy, Ben started a new job, I changed my name, we had both of our families here at home for Christmas, & we’ve worked together as a team on building our life together as well as our finances. We love spending time together & dreaming big dreams for our future. Both of us have mentioned that it is still some much fun calling each other husband & wife. As we were reflecting the other night & talking about the last 6 months of marriage, the same truth rang true in both of our hearts: we’ve never felt more in love. Maybe it’s the honeymoon season, but either way, I love this man & am so thankful we are on this path together.
