Taking The Next Step

I knew I needed to take the next step in my blogging & content creating, but I couldn’t figure out exactly what that looked like. My husband must have been reading my mind when he suggested that I take over our office in order to create more possibilities for my business. He is the biggest supporter of my dreams. I am one lucky lady! After that conversation, I spent the next few weeks dreaming up what is now my beauty room! This space has already been so great for my blog & my creativity. I can’t wait to see all the possibilities that arise because of this dreamy space.

My Secret Garden

Seeing as though my brand’s name is Felix & Flora, I wanted this room to feel like a garden. My own secret garden. I do have some real plants, like the ones hanging in these gorgeous pots we got from our wedding registry, but I also added some faux garlands for more texture. The wisteria that frames the window reminds me of my trip to Charleston which gave me so much inspiration for this room. Another huge source of inspiration for me was my trip to Italy. I loved seeing how flowers, vines, & greenery dressed every nook & cranny. Therefore, I mixed a greenery garland with a white dogwood bloom garland to dress my wardrobe. I love how dreamy these garlands make the entire room feel. It’s amazing how being surrounded by flowers brings me so much joy.

Statement Pieces

The two biggest purchases necessary to complete my beauty room were my large mirror & my wooden wardrobe. I researched these pieces for quite some time searching for the best deals. My mirror was a must-have item so that I could share more try-ons & ootd pics more regularly. I found some really great offers on Wayfair & ended up purchasing mine during their semi-annual sale which saved me quite a bit of money. This wardrobe was perfect for my beauty room not only because of it’s amazing price, but for how sturdy it is. I love that it’s made of wood rather than metal giving it a more cozy vibe. The shelves on the side are great for extra storage as well as displaying some of my favorite accessories.

Other great pieces I’ve added to this room are my sheer curtains. They still let a lot of natural light in which I love & tie up in a bow for a romantic & feminine touch. My white floating shelf is now home to some of my daily beauty products, but it’s also great for shooting shelfies. I added some new art to the room like this whimsical blue & white piece that is currently on sale! Finding creative ways to hang & display things added my own personal touch on this room. It’s so me & I love love love it!

Room To Grow

This room is “finished” for now, but I already have ideas for the future! I want to paint the long wooden cubes white & cover the top with a really lovely botanical print like this one. Also, I want to add more plants to the room. There can never be enough! I’m really picky about rugs, but when I find the right one, I think a nice rug with navy accents in it & an emerald green pouf chair would go perfectly in my secret garden in the future.

Print Mixing For Beginners

Hello Everyone!

Print mixing is an art filled with creativity, imagination, & just plain guts. It’s quite difficult to know at times whether different prints or textures play well together or not. I’m not going to pretend that I am an expert on this topic, but I wanted to share with you some of the things I have learned over the past few years about mixing prints. Maybe you will also like to go on this styling journey with me? We can start as beginners today…& soon become pros…? *fingers crossed*

Print Mixing For Beginners

First of all, in order to style & mix prints, you must own some. Prints can be quite a scary thing to buy because in the back of your mind, there is that fear that, “It won’t match other things”, or “It won’t get enough wear time to be worth the money”. Trust me, I’ve been there. I’ve also been all the way on the other side of the spectrum where all I did was buy prints…the bolder the better! Now that’s a difficult wardrobe to own. I think it’s best to find some middle ground (& impulse control), & find both prints & non-prints that can fit in your wardrobe seamlessly.

As a beginning print mixer, stripes, florals, & polka dots are where we begin. And with spring just around the corner, what perfect prints to add to your wardrobe (if you don’t have them already!). These prints, for the most part, play well together. The trick is pairing the right size & the right color. As far as size goes, a safe bet is pairing a small print with a large print. In the outfit I’ve styled for this post, I chose a very small printed striped top & paired it with a large floral print skirt. I also could have chosen a bigger striped print top with a small floral print skirt, or a floral top with a striped skirt for that matter.

–  Style tip –

Mix a large print with a small print for easy success.

The next big task: color. Now, you all know your wardrobe & what colors you wear the most. For me, I tend to wear mostly pinks & blues. Sure I have other colors in my wardrobe (thanks to last year’s fashion goals), but while shopping, it’s good to know what color palette I wear the most. It’s easier to integrate prints & patterns that have similar colors to clothes you already own. If the color thing still seems scary, neutral is always a good route to go.

–   Style tip  –

Neutrals are always winners

In this outfit, you remember, I mixed a white top with tiny light pink stripes with a bold green floral skirt. The bright green seems a bit scary & way too colorful for my comfort zone, but the reason it fits in my wardrobe is because of the shades of pink in the flowers. I knew I had enough white & pink shirts that I could pair with this, & it’s bold print was just the styling challenge I was looking for. A classic denim jacket it the perfect neutral jacket to pair with a bold print. A must have in your spring wardrobe.

–   Style tip  –

Know what colors you wear most. Sticking to patterns in this color palette is a sure fire way to have mixing success.

Friday Five – Never Say Never

Hello Everyone!

I just got back from my NYC trip! It was amazing to say the least. I have so many fun pictures and stories to share with you, but they are still so jumbled up my head. While I’m sorting everything out, I wanted to share with you some bits of encouragement I’ve found recently.

I know it’s hard to have passions that are not the norm. I mean, I’m a professional dancer and a blogger, for goodness sake! Taking the risk to pursue passions such as these requires guts. It takes finding that inner voice (think…the little engine that could) that reminds you over and over, “I can do this.” and, “Don’t give up.” The struggle is real, am I right?! Constantly criticizing and comparing your work to other, is exhausting, yet somehow necessary to stay relevant and put your best work out there. It’s so hard to be original. To stay true to yourself and own who you are and what you stand for. There are days you feel like, “Does it even matter?”, “Does anyone even care?” But the answer is YES! If there is anything I have learned while pursuing these passions, it’s that if you’re willing to put the work into it, people with listen and your work will grow and thrive.

Waiting is the hardest part. Wanting results overnight just doesn’t happen. I hate that, don’t you? I want everything that I want right now.

Here is where the “Never say never” is most vital.

Never say it will never happen.

Never doubt your talent or creativity. It’s yours and only yours. No one else can do it like you can.

Never say you can’t do something.

Never let someone else define your limits.

Never say never.

You can do it.

Don’t give up.

Your dreams matter.

Give your passions worth and don’t shy away from putting in the extra work.

Be patient.

Surround yourself with people who can encourage you and lift your spirits during discouraging seasons.

To my fellow bloggers:

It’s so hard, especially for me right now just six months in, to keep the faith and keeping creating content. But I’m not giving up. This dreams deserve a fighting chance. I can’t wait to see where this blog takes me in the next 5 years. (Thank you to all of you who are here with me in the beginning! Love you guys!)

Below are 5 things encouraging me to keep the faith at the moment. I hope these can help refresh your drive and passion to continue creating awesome content. (Leave your blog URL in the comments below and I PROMISE I will stop by and show some love!)

1. Girlboss

Have you guys read this book or seen this show? Well if not, I highly recommend it! I’m currently watching it on Netflix and am only halfway through the season and I am already totally inspired.

5. Books

Love Style Life & The Way She Wears It are both so inspiring. Garance’s story and her since of style and fashion is deeply influenced by two big cities she has called home: NYC & Paris. She truly makes you believe that anything is possible. Dallas Shaw is a genius. Her book is totally helping me focus my brand (in terms of fashion) while making it truly unique to me. Life. Changing. Now, I haven’t read The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying Up yet, but while I was in New York last week, I met a lady who recommended this book to me, and by her description of it and the way she talked about it, I know I am going to love it. The main idea I took away from her description was this: “Does this (article of clothing) bring me joy?” I love that! What a great requirement for any wardrobe or any future purchase. Can’t wait to read this one!

What things inspire you to keep the faith and never say never? xx
