Versatility: The Easiest Dress To Re-Style

My Two Favorite Blairs

Feeling very much like Blair in this outfit. Which Blair you might ask? Well, two of them actually, & both are fashion icons. The first being Blair Waldorf from one of the best shows ever, Gossip Girl. Her feminine, preppy style is nodded to in this look along with her go-to accessory: the headband. I had to shoot this look on steps because what queen of the upper east side doesn’t each lunch on the steps of the Met everyday?

The other beautiful Blair I’m referencing in this post is Blair Eadie, fellow blogger, designer, & creator of Atlantic-Pacific. She is one of the most fearless fashionistas I know. Her outfits are a work of art. & a source of endless inspiration. I’m drawn to her bold color mixing, her dramatic silhouettes, & her love of cat eye sunglasses (a favorite of mine as well). She always seems to make even her most flashy outfits look casual & totally wearable, somehow. One of the ways she does this is by pairing her looks with oxfords which is why I’ve done just that here. Such a fun & comfortable way to mix up a look & dress it down a bit.

The Best Dress To Invest In

This fun outfit inspired by the Blairs features my jacquard midi dress (seen here & here) from Chicwish. Let me tell you a little secret…a dress like this is the very best dress to invest in solely based on how versatile it is. As I continue to curate my wardrobe, I find that a classic sleeveless, crew neck dress is beyond valuable. It’s the perfect piece for both layering under & over. I’m loving layering different fun tops underneath, particularly ones with statement sleeves, high necks, & pussy bows (like the one I’m wearing). A silhouette like this also works perfectly with a belt added around the waist. Mrs. Maisel has given me major belt envy. (If you have not watched that show, you are missing out!) But honestly, next time you’re shopping & you see a dress with this shape, snatch it up! You’ll wear it, & re-style it constantly!

Time To Accessorize!

No look is ever complete without the proper accessories. These super sweet heart earrings are under $5 & make quite the statement. They would also be perfect for Valentine’s Day which is right around the corner. Another key piece to this look, which was mentioned before, is my burgundy headband. I’m so into this trend that’s making a comeback at the moment. A headband has a way of completing any outfit. (See some headband inspo here & here) To finish off my look, I added a super affordable pair of cat eye sunglasses, & a floral embroidered crossbody bag.

There is absolutely no way to know how you are going to react or feel when trying on wedding dresses. In movies & shows like Say Yes To The Dress, there are usually tears from either the bride, the family, or both. It’s portrayed as a very emotional experience, but it is not always that way. Let yourself feel any emotion that comes your way. For me, I had only a couple happy tears but not even associated with the dress I chose. I guess what I’m trying to say is that don’t expect a huge rush of emotions or “that feeling” to come that is going to help chose your dress. Choose the one you feel your best in. The one that you know you will love looking back on for years to come.

Before I went to try on any wedding dresses, I was convinced I wanted a flowy dress with lace long sleeves. I mean, my Pinterest board was covered in them! I knew I wanted to try on other styles like a classic ballroom style just to be able to have that experience, but I thought I would end up in a long sleeved dress.

My family lives in Oklahoma, so before they came for me to officially say, “Yes” to a dress, I booked my first round of bridal appointments in the D.C. area with my friend & one of my maid of honors, Melissa. We first went to BHLDN where I tried on almost every single one of their dresses. It was here where I had my first bit of bridal tears. There’s something about seeing yourself in a veil for the first time. It got me. I actually ended up ordering their Perdita dress & thought it could be the winner. However when it arrived, I found that it just didn’t fit me right, so I sent it back.

We then visited another bridal salon, but found nothing noteworthy. Finally, we went to Love Couture Bridal. This place is the real deal. They are always burning the most amazing Nest candles inside & the people who work there are so genuine & helpful. I was helped by a lovely lady named, Francoise, who actually used to be a ballet dancer as well! She pulled so many incredible dresses in my price range to try on.

My runner up dress was the West gown by Hayley Paige. I’m actually shocked that I didn’t end up choosing this dress just because of how sparkly & stunning it is! Melissa & I drove home that night & I was so torn between Perdita, West, & what we called “The Jackie-O” dress. Guess which one I woke up thinking about the next day…

Yep! I woke up picturing myself walking down the aisle in that simple & elegant, “Jackie-O” dress. When I finally went back to Love Couture with my family, I tried on both the West & the “Jackie-O” dress, but there was no question that the Romy gown by Anne Barge was the dress I would marry my husband in.

This dress is just so classic & timeless. I knew that I would show it to my grandkids in pictures someday & still love it. It’s never going out of style, & it fit just perfectly. The dress gave me all the bridal feels, & even though it is quite simple, the details are quite memorable. There are buttons that go all the way down the back of the dress which immediately made me think of Pippa Middleton’s dress at the royal wedding. I love the off the shoulder sleeves, the low back, & the unique cross in the back. Overall, this dress was so perfect for my wedding day, but you know I couldn’t have said yes without a little sparkle…

Francoise knew what she was doing when she paired the Romy dress with the incredible Tippi veil. Oh-my-goodness. Not only is it long & dramatic, but it has the most beautiful flowers with delicate pearls fluttering along the bottom of it. It’s such a special piece & makes quite the statement, which of course I love.

I knew that I would only wear the veil for the ceremony, so I wanted to look at some options for adding some sparkle to my dress for the reception. I swore I would never wear a belt, but I changed my mind once I saw how good the Marian belt looked wrapped around my waist. It also went so well with my Art Deco earrings & my bridal heels I found on sale at Nordstrom Rack. (These helped be be able to wear my heels in the grass!) This combination was like a match made in heaven.

On the actual day, I didn’t know if I would want to wear my heels for the entire night or not, so I got this pair of pearl slides just in case. They actually saved my feet & allowed me to dance the night away pain-free. I even ended up wearing them to the rehearsal dinner the night before.

One last & very important accessory I thought I’d mention is my choice of undergarments with this dress. I chose to get my first pair of SPANX to go under my wedding dress & it worked out perfectly. There were no lines & I felt very covered!

Yes, yes, a million times, YES! I felt so beautiful & so bridal in this dress. I’m so happy with my choice even though it’s not what I thought I would choose. You really just never know until you go & try things on what you are going to fall in love with. Ben absolutely loved this dress too. I’ll treasure my memories in it forever.
