My Forever Valentine

This is our fourth Valentine’s Day together, but this year is the most special of them all. We are officially a family now & since our wedding, our love has only grown. (As cheesy as it sounds…it’s true!) Ben & I wanted to do something special together to celebrate our first married Valentine’s Day, but we had to do it a little bit early this year. I will be performing tonight & the rest of the weekend, so Ben had the great idea of visiting the beautiful Agecroft Hall last weekend. Neither of us had ever been, so we slept in, had cinnamon rolls & coffee, then left at noon to arrive right when the gates opened.

Agecroft Hall

Agecroft Hall is a lovely, Tudor manor house right on the James River located just minutes from our house. Believe it or not, this home was built in the late 15th century in Lancashire, England. Then in the early 20th century it was deconstructed, shipped overseas, & rebuilt. This place is incredible. The details, paintings, elaborate beds & ceilings were magnificent. Not to mention the masterfully laid out gardens. Needless to say, we cannot wait to go back in the spring & summer when the gardens are in full bloom. I hear that in the summer, the also have live Shakespeare performances outside! We had a lovely afternoon on this amazing property & cannot wait to go back.

Our First 6 Months

Ben & I recently celebrated our 6 month wedding anniversary. Since our magical wedding day, we’ve travelled to Italy, Ben started a new job, I changed my name, we had both of our families here at home for Christmas, & we’ve worked together as a team on building our life together as well as our finances. We love spending time together & dreaming big dreams for our future. Both of us have mentioned that it is still some much fun calling each other husband & wife. As we were reflecting the other night & talking about the last 6 months of marriage, the same truth rang true in both of our hearts: we’ve never felt more in love. Maybe it’s the honeymoon season, but either way, I love this man & am so thankful we are on this path together.

Why I Love Fashion

Why I Love Fashion

A Life Long Love

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved fashion. In fact, even before that, when I was just a tiny thing, I was known to say things like, “I really neeeeed jewelry.” (when asked what I wanted for Christmas), & I always chose a dress over pants or leggings when given the option because I always needed to “spin”.

In high school, I had a couple of friends with whom I decided to make a true fashion statement everyday at school & not care what anyone else thought. We would look through fashion magazines & find trends or accessories that we thought we could DIY at home, since we didn’t have any money. We sewed buttons on shirts, made hair clips & headbands, distressed our own jeans, etc. I’m sure people thought we were ridiculous (my boyfriend at the time definitely did), but we didn’t care. Fashion was a bond we shared. It gave us confidence to be whoever we wanted to be. Of course, I have had my share of terrible outfits, but that’s all part of the process.

This is why I love this beautiful thing we call fashion. It shapes you, expresses your mood & feelings, as well as holds that moment to a time in history.

My Daily Masterpiece

How cool is it that we can literally wear art on our bodies every single day?! Not only do we get to wear art, but we get to create art by piecing a look together bit by bit. Each accessory creating more depth & meaning to the daily masterpiece. A new creation each day! Isn’t that an amazing thing? Choosing colors by mood or season to make a statement.

I love that an outfit can say so much with no words at all. Your daily look can say, “Look at me”, “Don’t look at me”, “I’m so happy”, “I’m quite sad”, “I just want to be cozy”, “Don’t take your eyes off me”, or it can even be the most subtle & perfect form of rebellion. Even not trying to make a statement is making a statement. Whether you think so or not, YOU are an artist, cultivating your craft one day & one outfit at a time.

Why I Love Fashion

No End In Sight

Another huge reason why I love fashion is that it is always evolving & changing. There are always more colors & prints to mix, more ways to combine what I already own, more accessories to play with, & more silhouettes to discover. I love that while some pieces are classic & timeless that will be worn year after year, others are trends that fade with each new year. There is literally no end in sight for fashion & what will come next.

Fashion gives so much room for play & individuality, while also being a common ground for each & every one of us. I love that just switching one article of clothing like a coat, a handbag, or a pair of shoes, can completely transform a look. There is always more to discover, rules to learn & then to break, trends to love & trends to hate, a time to purchase & a time to donate.

Overall, I love fashion because of the joy & confidence it brings me. Each day I choose to dress up for me. A fun & bold outfit makes me walk proudly, laugh often, & be the best version of me that I can be.

We’re Engaged!

We're Engaged
Hello Everyone!

We’re Engaged! (In case you didn’t read the title…)

I’m just so excited to be planning a life together with my very best friend! But before we get into that, & wedding details, let’s talk about what everyone is thinking: How did he propose?

Ben & I traveled to Oklahoma, after my final Nutcracker performance, to be with my family for Christmas. I had a hunch it might happen over Christmas, but I was not expecting how it happened in the least! So, in my family, we set a designated time to wake up & arrive in the living room to first open our stockings. After opening our stockings, we go into the kitchen to have coffee & breakfast. Once full, happy, & caffeinated, we make our way back into the living room to open the real presents.

So here we are, all gathered together: my mom & dad, Grandma, Nana & Papa, my cousin Brittany, 2 of my 3 sisters, my brother, & Ben & I. We typically open presents from youngest to oldest, but before Ella could get started on hers, Ben said there was one for me that needed to be opened first. At this point, I’m still not sure if this is it or not, maybe he was just really excited about a particular present for me? I start to unwrap a rather large box, & inside I see layers & layers of photo of us. So many amazing memories made together over the past 3 years. My hands start to shake as I realize what is happening. I start to show each photo to the family, but then realized how many there were (62 to be exact) & briefly looked at each one by myself. Once I looked through several layers, I came to a wooden box. Inside this box were…more pictures! Then I found the prettiest little pink velvet box at the very bottom, to which Ben told me I needed to stand up for this one! He took my hands & shared so many sweet words of our love (which I only know from the video haha) & that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. He opened the box, and ASKED ME TO MARRY HIM! Of course, I said yes! He put the prettiest ring I have ever seen on my finger & I kissed my FIANCE! It was such a special moment. I felt so lucky to be able to share it right there with my family.

After that, it was time to open presents, except, how can you top that?! I could not stop staring at this gorgeous rock on my finger! You know the funny part was that every single present I opened that day went SO well with my ring! hahaha

I spent the rest of the day on a cloud. We were getting married, & I wanted to shout it from the rooftops.

After spending a few days in Oklahoma, we traveled up to Maine to visit & celebrate with Ben’s family. We made some wedding plans (& even had a taste testing) because we are getting married in Maine! Oh my word I am just so excited! July 21, 2018 will be the most magical day of my life.

We had Ben’s sister, Abby, take some engagement photos of us on the property. In sub-zero temperatures I might add! I love them so much & I will cherish them forever.

Friday Five – Lessons From My Mom

Hello Everyone!
It’s Mother’s Day weekend, & what better way to show some love & appreciation to my wonderful mamma than to reflect on some key life lessons she has taught me over the years.
My mom & I are very close & talk almost every day, so there are endless amounts of lessons learned from her, but today, I want to share 5 with you. (Imagine that…;))
1. Show Them Your Passion
My mom has been my biggest fan & my emotional support system during my career as a professional dancer. In fact, she is coming to NYC today to watch me perform at the Joyce Theater! But before it was my job, I had countless performances, showcases, summer intensives, & auditions where I had to prove myself as a dancer. It took a lot of guts & confidence boosting, which my mamma was & still is always so good at doing. The one phrase she repeated to me time after time was, “Show them your passion”. In that moment, hearing those words, I was calm, I knew that I could go out there and pour my heart out because even if I messed up, I always had someone who believed in me.
Thank you, mom, for never doubting me, & always lifting my spirits to push me toward my goal.
2. Kiss Lots Of Boys
When I was in middle school & early high school, I had the plan that I wasn’t going to kiss anyone until I was engaged to them. I know…I was crazy. I never wanted to casually date. I was very serious about finding my husband. But let’s be honest, what middle schooler or even high schooler is husband material? My mother, knowing this (even though she married her high school sweetheart), encouraged me to kiss lots of boys! I thought she was crazy for saying that at the time, but what a valuable lesson, am I right? I mean, I haven’t kissed lots of boys, but it freed me from searching for a “husband”, & instead finding a best friend (and a good kisser…)
Thank you for saving me from a potential disaster! 😉
3. Break the (Fashion) Rules
I went to an extremely strict school (on my own accord, I am weird & love rules) with a ridiculously strict dress code. One of the rules being no holes in your jeans. Because of this rule, every time my mom came to my school, she would wear her ripped jeans, just because she could. & she rocked them! What a great lesson in fashion. Don’t wear something because someone else likes it or not wear something because someone says it’s wrong. Fashion is an expression of your personality, wear it because it makes you happy.
Thanks mom for encouraging me to break the fashion rules!
4. Love Pretty Things
I like to say I’ve inherited my love of flowers, candles, & capturing photos from my mom. I have such fond memories of seeing my mom working in the garden, & our house filled with warm scented candles. She still loves candles, & when either of us finds a particularly “yummy” one, the other MUST get it. My love of photos & capturing every moment, I’m sure, comes from watching my mom work for hours on end to beautifully craft personalized scrapbooks for my siblings & I. Savoring those memories and turning them into works of art, hmmm seems familiar…
Thanks mom for instilling the love of beautiful things. They brighten my day just like you.
5. Be Kind
Honestly, my mom has taught me so much about kindness. About genuine love even for those I’ve never met. Every single person deserves love & kindness even if they haven’t show those things to me. Kill them with kindness, if you will. The best part is, she hasn’t taught me kindness with just her words, but through her life. I’ve seen it displayed even when it’s hard. It challenges me to reflect on who I am and how I treat other people.
Thank you for for being someone I can always look up to. I am so proud to call you my mom.
