This is the last post for wedding week, but don’t worry, I have a feeling this will not be my last wedding post. Today Ben & I want to share some of our very favorite moments of our wedding day, & share with you the true feelings we had on that day. Every couple is different & every wedding is different, but this is our story, our song…this love is ours. (Yes, I did just reference 2 different Taylor Swift songs.)

The Feels

To my own surprise my stress level on wedding day was actually pretty low. There was so much to do, and so much to keep busy with, that my mind didn’t have a chance to get caught up in “what if” scenarios. Adversely, during our rehearsal ceremony, I was a complete wreck, and started crying even before Lauren walked down the isle. (I’m a cryer)

All the feelings really came rushing in when Lauren’s music came on before she walked down the aisle. Such powerful music, accompanied by her stunning beauty, really took me a second to breathe it all in. We said our “I do’s”, danced our way out of the ceremony, and the moment I felt like I (we) could truly breathe was after we both signed our official marriage paperwork with our dear friend (and officiant) Billy. At that moment we were legally Malones, and we could breath, relax, eat some delicious food and celebrate our marriage!

My Highlights

The first highlight of the day for me came before any of the official celebrations started. I was getting dressed for some groomsmen photos and when I opened my shoebox to put on my shoes, Lauren had strategically hidden a love letter to me. It was simple, sweet, and one of the moments I’ll remember most fondly about that day.

Secondly, I’d be crazy if I didn’t highlight the amazing people who surrounded us for the whole day (and week) before our wedding. We absolutely wouldn’t have been able to pull it off if it weren’t for my family, my rockstar groomsmen, Laurens beautiful bridesmaids, significant others, and great neighbors.

Next up for me was the band. They totally drove the night for me, and being able to dance with my new wife, like we didn’t have a care in the world was awesome. Get a good band. you won’t regret it.

Last but certainly not least was our exit. As you’ve read in a previous post, we left our party to “I’ve Had The Time Of My Life” while there was a spectacular fireworks show was awesome. We left by boat. That’s pretty epic if you ask me.

The Feels

The whole time leading up to the wedding, I thought for sure that I would not cry at our wedding. I just knew I would be so happy, but I typically am not much of a public cryer. So when our rehearsal came around, the night before our wedding, & I come out of the woods & walk down the aisle with my dad towards Ben, I just lost it. I was shocked. I couldn’t contain my tears. Thinking back, I feel like I got totally lost in the planning mode, that for me, that was the first time this really felt real. I was really going to marry the man of my dreams. He chose me. I felt so completely known & loved just the same. I ended up crying three times over the course of the evening (totally not the norm for me), & was at a complete lose as to whether I would cry the next day or not.

On the actual day, I felt very prepared. I knew what had to be done, & I was totally ready to finally be Mrs. Malone. The only slight freak out I had on the day of was with my dress. I just kept steaming it & steaming it because I swore I could see more creases. My photographer had to convince me that the dress was fine & I should just put it on. Once I did, all the nerves went away. I had been dreaming of this day my entire life, so I was ready to soak in  every second of it.

My Highlights

Ben & I had gone the whole day without speaking to each other or even texting. So, my first highlight was definitely finally seeing him & holding his hands throughout the whole ceremony. These were the hands that helped carry me (literally) through a major foot injury at the very beginning of our relationship. His hands have warmed me, comforted me, cooked for me, cared for me, wiped my tears, fixed countless things around the house, & it’s those same hands I will be holding through every coming stage of life. I felt how precious it was to have someone like Ben in my life.

Another special part of the ceremony was having my family be a part of if. My dad spoke & performed the first half of our ceremony, & also my sister, Grace sang “Ought To Be” by Audrey Assad during our vow to grow. It was so amazing having them be a part of our ceremony.

It’s hard to pick a highlight, because it was all so perfect. I loved taking our photos & being all cute together. We had such a blast during our first dance, dancing our un-choreographed dance to our song, “Polka Dots & Moonbeams”. My dad & I had a dance-off for our first dance which was just so much fun. All of things things made for an incredible night, but I think that once all of the “tasks” of the evening were over & we could just let go & dance, that was maybe the best part of the day for me. All of that planning had worked out so well, & it felt so good to finally be married & dancing the night away with my husband.

You know what the weirdest part was? Leaving! I didn’t want the party to end! Don’t get me wrong, I was excited for some alone time with my husband, but after such a fun night that ended with fireworks & a petal toss on our way to the boat, it was the strangest thing to just float away & leave everyone! We didn’t even have any of the donuts from our wedding, so we snuck a couple onto the boat with us to have at our hotel that night. I highly recommend this! Don’t forget to bring food!

Anyways, all in all it was a magical day. I got to marry an absolute dream of a man & party with all of my favorite people. I’ll never forget it.

Our wedding day was pure magic. It took place in Harpswell, Maine at my husband’s family’s property right on the water. This place is already just breath-taking on it’s own. So much so that during my very first visit, I sat alone on the dock, writing in my journal, completely crying just imagining the prospect of getting married there one day in the future. Since it was already so beautiful, it was my biggest hope that the weather would be perfect so that we could enjoy the wedding & the reception without a tent. Our prayers were answered & it was just the most gorgeous day.

My number one task when dressing the space for our wedding was to make it truly ours. Put in the details that reflect our love, our relationship, & our personal style. Let me share with you a few ways we did just that.

Almost exactly a year before our wedding, we stood on the ground where we would be saying our “I do’s” to each other. We then determined when the best time to hold the ceremony would be, based on when the sun would just pass the trees & not be in anyone’s eyes. It worked out perfectly that in the time between our ceremony & the reception was golden hour which was just idyllic for our photos.

Then once the sun started to go down, we had hung lights above the reception site to illuminate the space. We also had about 90 candles along the tables lit for a pleasing ambiance as well as to light people’s faces in photos. It’s important to think about light in this way, because if you are paying for a good photographer to capture your day, it’s so important to ensure good light for them to be able to get the best photos.

We had a rather small wedding for such a vast space. I wanted it to still feel intimate, so we thought of ways to do just that even with a large space. For the ceremony, we kept the chairs looking straight ahead in even rows. This helped set parameters. The shape of the chairs helped provide structure to the space, giving it that more intimate feel. Also, having the large arbor (which Ben helped make) as the focal point really helped draw everyone’s focus to the main(e) event.

For the reception space, the layout came together about a week & a half before the wedding. The deck where the band played had just recently been built which inspired this new setup. I had originally pictured the space in reverse, with the water being behind the band, but I think this way was even better! When the guests looked towards Ben & I, they could see the water behind us.

The table setup was also key in dressing this space. Our band played on the corner of the deck & the tables went out on a diagonal in a U shape to form the perimeters of the dance floor. Everyone danced in the empty space between the tables & had a great time. Also, the lights hung above helped create a clear outline for the reception space.

The smallest details can make the biggest impact when dressing a space. From freshly potted plants at the ceremony site to lights along the dock, these details look lovely, & also capture so well in photos. My MIL even had the great idea of giving each of the statues in the gardens little flower crowns! How adorable?! While putting the final touches on the space, my bridesmaids even laid some extra greenery & flowers to line the aisle. This made a huge difference & I loved the way it looked.

There were so many amazing ferns all over the property, so naturally I wanted to incorporate them into the decor. We used little fern leaves to dress the seating chart as well as to add that special touch to each person’s place setting. Using natural elements from the space like this really gives a cohesive feel.

E x p e r i e n c e

So yes, this wedding was about Ben & I getting married, but people flew in from all over the country, so we wanted to show them a good time. During cocktail hour, people could grab a drink & take a boat ride around the harbor. Guests loved this, seeing as though some of them had never experienced anything like it before. We also had a fireworks display to the song “I’ve Had The Time Of My Life” right before we exited by boat. It was pretty magical. Honestly though, the band really sealed the deal. They were incredible & helped make this event one to remember.

I know not every wedding can have fireworks & boat rides, but make sure to think about the guests attending your wedding. They are showing so much love & support by being there for the two of you, so show them your gratitude by giving them an incredible night of love & laughter.

July 21, 2018 will be forever engraved in my mind as the best day of my life. I’ve never felt such an overflow of joy & love than on this very special day. Ever since I can remember, I’ve dreamed of this day, how I would look & how I would feel & if it would be as magical as I had worked it up in my head to be. Let me tell you that it was everything I ever dreamed of & more. All the days spent planning & dreaming of this day & even all the money spent was so worth it in the end. My wedding day was pure magic, & I felt such a sense of accomplishment knowing that I planned each & every detail on my own. (With the encouragement & approval of my now HUSBAND, Ben, of course.)

For a bit of back story, Ben & I live in Richmond, VA. We decided to have a destination wedding in Harpswell, Maine on his family property that is right on the water. One of the perks to having our wedding on family property is that we were free to do literally whatever we wanted. I spent hours just roaming the property & dreaming up how to use the space, make it my own, & transform the already incredible land into the venue of my dreams.

We loved that this wedding was one of a kind. No one had ever gotten married at the spot where we did & it felt so special. I think Taylor Swift said it best when she sang, “Right there where we stood was holy ground.”

Having such a clean slate to work with not only meant that I could dream up the physical transformation of the space, but also that we could choose whatever vendors we wanted & customize everything. Now I know this may seem like a nightmare to some people, but this was heavenly for me. Now it was time to dream big, make plans, & get it done.

I did all the planning & researching on my own, but that’s not to say I didn’t use some very helpful tools that are out there & available for anyone to use. Let me share with you my planning MVPs.

The Wedding Wire App

This was the app I found to have the best wedding checklist out there. I actually used this throughout my entire planning process. It provides the most detailed list I’ve found & let’s you check things off once you’ve completed them. This app also tells you when to do each task & if things are overdue. It was a lifesaver.

Pinterest

I know this sounds like a no brainer, but literally this app has changed the wedding planning game. One of the biggest tips I can give to brides who are just starting to plan their wedding but don’t really know what direction to take, is to first just pin everything you like. Seriously, go crazy. Then, go back & skim through your board. What colors did you pin the most? What style, feel, & theme stands out from the rest? Usually, you can start to find a common thread among the random ones, so then just delete the pins that don’t match the others. Just as you don’t go to Target knowing what you want to get, Target tells you what you need, Pinterest can show you what you like the most & help you narrow down your ideas.

One more huge Pinterest tip is find list of things that brides usually forget. These lists are so helpful. Stay ahead & learn from past brides.

YouTube

Doing your own flowers but you don’t know how? There’s a video for that. Corsages are tricky. There’s a video for that. How do you mix fresh & silk flowers to make an arbor dressing? There’s a video for that.

You get the picture. There are endless videos with so much great information out there. When in doubt, search YouTube.

Goodwill

We found so many amazing detail pieces for our wedding at Goodwill. Over the course of our engagement, my family members & I found over 90 brass candlesticks that we used on the tables for our reception. I don’t know if you know this, but those things can be SO expensive. We went to antique shops & found sets of two going for $50-$80! On the flip side, at Goodwill, we found 3 for $5.25 or something along those lines, which was a lifesaver.

Instagram Hashtags

These were so helpful for me especially while planning a wedding in Maine while living in Virginia. I found both our photographer & our videographer, which are both INCREDIBLE through instagram hashtags like, #mainewedding, #maineweddingvideographer, #maineweddingphotographer, etc.

One of the hardest parts of planning a wedding are the finances. It’s quite difficult knowing where you are wanting to spend your money. Something that really helped Ben & me in the beginning was writing down the different aspects of the wedding & then ranking them based on importance. This helped show us where it was worth spending a little extra money. For us, a great band for the reception was at the top of our list, so it didn’t hurt as bad to spend the extra money on an incredible band because we knew how important it was to the both of us. We also knew that since it was a destination wedding for most of the guests, & that many people would not be able to make it, that having a really good photographer & videographer there to capture our day was very important to us. That way, we could share our magical day even with friends & family who were unable to make the trip.

No one knows you & your partner better than yourselves, so if you’re thinking about planning it on your own, but are not sure if you can do it, let me tell you, YOU CAN! I’m also currently taking on clients to help you create your very own wedding vision. I would love to help you make your day as dreamy as my was for me. If you need help narrowing down your ideas or even just a consultation on wedding planning, because sometimes you just need a plan for your planning, I’m here to help. If your interested, shoot me an email here & we can talk about what this means for you.

Wedding planning does not have to be stressful. It can be such a wonderful experience. My husband & I laugh that literally the day after our wedding I was saying that I needed my sisters & my friends to get married ASAP so I can plan the next wedding. It’s such a special process for a life changing day.
