A Happy Vacation, Is A Vacation Well Planned

For me, planning is definitely something that comes pretty naturally. It allows me to dream big & really get excited about events in the future. Planning a trip, especially one in another country, was something completely new to me a couple of years ago. However daunting it seemed at the time, all it takes is biting the bullet & following these easy travel planning tips for a dreamy vacation full of fun activities & amazing outfits.

Tip 1: Create A Mood Board

This step, though multi-faceted, may be the most important step in planning a great trip. First, get on Pinterest & start researching travel bloggers who have visited your desired destination. Chances are, if you want to travel there, they have been there too, so why not learn from them? Search for great places to eat, the most “Instagrammable” spots, & things to do. Get out a pen & paper & start making lists of places & ideas that look interesting to you. Pin inspiring photos from these blogs on your destination mood board to look back on & get pumped!

I’m not going to Greece, but here is an example of what my mood board for my imaginary trip to Greece looks like…

Travel Planning Tips

Tip 2: Find Your Color Palette

Note my mood board above. See the blues, white, & natural tan colors that stand out? This will now become my color palette when planning my travel outfits. I touched on this in my most recent Q&A, but one of the best ways to avoid over packing on a trip is to stick with a color palette. This makes mixing & matching a breezy so that you can create several outfits from only a few key pieces. I love dressing in the colors of the places I’m going. It makes me feel like I belong to wherever my travel destination may be. You can see outfits & accessories for my pretend trip to Greece in these photos.

See me blending in in Positano, Capri, & Napoli.

Tip 3: Make Reservations

I never like to over book my trips, but I find that if I have something booked & planned for at least every other day, it really helps to create a schedule. Any famous restaurant? Make a reservation, even if it’s for lunch! Book a boat ride, a tour, a cooking class, a hike, or something fun & exciting that is unique to the location you’re visiting.

Tip 4: Research & Plan Some Logistics

Some important things to research before any trip are housing & transportation. Lots of blogs have recommendations as to where to stay, which can be helpful. Something you might want to consider if you’re looking to save a little bit of money is staying just outside the city. We did this in Italy & in Paris & totally loved it. It was nice to have a bit of quiet & calm in the evenings to decompress from the day.

As far as transportation goes, do your research to see whether people recommend using public transportation or car rentals. If you’re thinking about renting a car, don’t forget to take parking fees & even finding parking into consideration. In Paris, we walked & then took the water bus down the river! While we were in Positano, we walked & took the bus up & down the mountain. The point is, every city is different, & most blogs will give good recommendations on these matters.

Travel Planning Tips
Le Sirenuse is a very famous hotel in Positano with an iconic restaurant, La Sponda, inside. During my research, I found that if you wanted to go, you needed to make reservations at least a month in advance. The menu is quite expensive, so we made a reservation for lunch & split a couple of small plate items on the menu. The food was amazing, but the experience & the view was something I will never forget.

Tip 5: Study!

Remember that list you made of all the restaurants & places you wanted to visit? Now it’s time to mark all of them on the maps in your phone. Save each location & take a bit of time to study the map. Become familiar with some of the main roads & try to map out how your days will go. This will help so much when you arrive in a city you’ve never been to before.

&

If the country you are visiting has a native language other than your own, try setting some goals on Duolingo to brush up on, or learn a little bit of the language. Even just knowing the basics will go a long way.

July 21, 2018 will be forever engraved in my mind as the best day of my life. I’ve never felt such an overflow of joy & love than on this very special day. Ever since I can remember, I’ve dreamed of this day, how I would look & how I would feel & if it would be as magical as I had worked it up in my head to be. Let me tell you that it was everything I ever dreamed of & more. All the days spent planning & dreaming of this day & even all the money spent was so worth it in the end. My wedding day was pure magic, & I felt such a sense of accomplishment knowing that I planned each & every detail on my own. (With the encouragement & approval of my now HUSBAND, Ben, of course.)

For a bit of back story, Ben & I live in Richmond, VA. We decided to have a destination wedding in Harpswell, Maine on his family property that is right on the water. One of the perks to having our wedding on family property is that we were free to do literally whatever we wanted. I spent hours just roaming the property & dreaming up how to use the space, make it my own, & transform the already incredible land into the venue of my dreams.

We loved that this wedding was one of a kind. No one had ever gotten married at the spot where we did & it felt so special. I think Taylor Swift said it best when she sang, “Right there where we stood was holy ground.”

Having such a clean slate to work with not only meant that I could dream up the physical transformation of the space, but also that we could choose whatever vendors we wanted & customize everything. Now I know this may seem like a nightmare to some people, but this was heavenly for me. Now it was time to dream big, make plans, & get it done.

I did all the planning & researching on my own, but that’s not to say I didn’t use some very helpful tools that are out there & available for anyone to use. Let me share with you my planning MVPs.

The Wedding Wire App

This was the app I found to have the best wedding checklist out there. I actually used this throughout my entire planning process. It provides the most detailed list I’ve found & let’s you check things off once you’ve completed them. This app also tells you when to do each task & if things are overdue. It was a lifesaver.

Pinterest

I know this sounds like a no brainer, but literally this app has changed the wedding planning game. One of the biggest tips I can give to brides who are just starting to plan their wedding but don’t really know what direction to take, is to first just pin everything you like. Seriously, go crazy. Then, go back & skim through your board. What colors did you pin the most? What style, feel, & theme stands out from the rest? Usually, you can start to find a common thread among the random ones, so then just delete the pins that don’t match the others. Just as you don’t go to Target knowing what you want to get, Target tells you what you need, Pinterest can show you what you like the most & help you narrow down your ideas.

One more huge Pinterest tip is find list of things that brides usually forget. These lists are so helpful. Stay ahead & learn from past brides.

YouTube

Doing your own flowers but you don’t know how? There’s a video for that. Corsages are tricky. There’s a video for that. How do you mix fresh & silk flowers to make an arbor dressing? There’s a video for that.

You get the picture. There are endless videos with so much great information out there. When in doubt, search YouTube.

Goodwill

We found so many amazing detail pieces for our wedding at Goodwill. Over the course of our engagement, my family members & I found over 90 brass candlesticks that we used on the tables for our reception. I don’t know if you know this, but those things can be SO expensive. We went to antique shops & found sets of two going for $50-$80! On the flip side, at Goodwill, we found 3 for $5.25 or something along those lines, which was a lifesaver.

Instagram Hashtags

These were so helpful for me especially while planning a wedding in Maine while living in Virginia. I found both our photographer & our videographer, which are both INCREDIBLE through instagram hashtags like, #mainewedding, #maineweddingvideographer, #maineweddingphotographer, etc.

One of the hardest parts of planning a wedding are the finances. It’s quite difficult knowing where you are wanting to spend your money. Something that really helped Ben & me in the beginning was writing down the different aspects of the wedding & then ranking them based on importance. This helped show us where it was worth spending a little extra money. For us, a great band for the reception was at the top of our list, so it didn’t hurt as bad to spend the extra money on an incredible band because we knew how important it was to the both of us. We also knew that since it was a destination wedding for most of the guests, & that many people would not be able to make it, that having a really good photographer & videographer there to capture our day was very important to us. That way, we could share our magical day even with friends & family who were unable to make the trip.

No one knows you & your partner better than yourselves, so if you’re thinking about planning it on your own, but are not sure if you can do it, let me tell you, YOU CAN! I’m also currently taking on clients to help you create your very own wedding vision. I would love to help you make your day as dreamy as my was for me. If you need help narrowing down your ideas or even just a consultation on wedding planning, because sometimes you just need a plan for your planning, I’m here to help. If your interested, shoot me an email here & we can talk about what this means for you.

Wedding planning does not have to be stressful. It can be such a wonderful experience. My husband & I laugh that literally the day after our wedding I was saying that I needed my sisters & my friends to get married ASAP so I can plan the next wedding. It’s such a special process for a life changing day.
