Our Quick Day Trip

Over the years, Ben & I have grown to truly love living in Richmond. One of the great perks is how close it is to D.C.! This time, in an effort to avoid city traffic & paying for parking, we drove to the end of the blue line at Franconia-Springfield, parked our car there for free, & then rode the metro into the city. If you are entering the city from Virginia, I would highly recommend this trick.

Anyways, we went to D.C. to meet up with Ben’s parents who happened to be in town for work. It’s always great to be able to spend time with family seeing as though none of our family lives in VA (but I’m really pushing for at least some of my family to move out here someday…). We walked along the mall, ate tasty street food, & just got to sit & catch up which is always so refreshing.

I Could Look At Flowers All Day

After we ate lunch, we walked through stunning floral gardens. We saw roses of every color imaginable. Basically I was in heaven. I wish I had taken more pictures of all the colors, but of course I was drawn to all of the pinks! They were all so lovely & fragrant & effortlessly whimsical & I could have stayed there all day long. But after a long walk in the garden, we made our way over to an area of the city I had never been to…

District Wharf

This area of the city has been so well designed. It’s right on the water & is full of amazing restaurants, cafés, shops, & more. They even had a large bonfire for people to make s’mores at. The thing I loved most about this area though, was how visually pleasing they had made it. It was clean & has fresh pots of gorgeous flowers around every corner. Those little details mean so much & made our experience so delightful. I definitely cannot wait to go back again soon.

Dressing For The Day

Dresses are definitely what I feel most comfortable in. They give me confidence, make me feel like such a lady, & bring me so much joy to walk, twirl, run, skip, frolic, & jaunt around in. Ok, so maybe I don’t skip on a daily basis, but I could & doing so in a dress is like living out my childhood dreams. If wearing dresses makes me this happy, then doing so should not be reserved for evenings & special occasions. No, dresses should be worn on the daily, exuding all the lady-like confidence & joy.

Let me share with you what I look for when shopping for day dresses, & how I like to style them for an everyday, casual yet sophisticated look.

Choosing Your “No-Fuss” Dress

A good day dress is a “no fuss” dress, in my opinion. One that I won’t have to worry about revealing too much when I lean forward or bend over to pick something up. It’s comfortable, not tight, & makes you smile when wearing it. I love this classic wrap dress from Chicwish for literally all of those reasons. This dress is comfortable to wear. It’s a nice, no-fuss length, & there is even a small button at the top of the wrap to keep from revealing more than you’d like. I love the subtle & sweet blue & yellow floral pattern with the slightly puffy sleeves. Finding a “no-fuss” dress with great design details such as these ensures you’ll wear it with ease over & over again.

Styling Your Day Dress

Styling day dresses looks slightly different depending on the current season, but the same principles apply. For shoes, a classic ballet flat is a great year-round choice. In the fall & winter, you could also pair your day dresses with a pair of knee high boots, loafers, or oxfords. Choose the pair that will be most comfortable for your daily activities while still adding to that feminine, boss babe vibe.

A great bag like this embroidered brown bag I can’t stop wearing, is an ideal bag to have in your collection. It can be worn year-round & has that same “no-fuss” feel as your day dress. There are no zippers that get stuck, contraptions to maneuver, just a simple snap under the buckle for easy opening & closing. It also comes with a gorgeous embroidered crossbody strap for when you need to be hands-free!

Accessorizing your day dress should be minimal & casual, yet strategic & cohesive. Adding one simple hair clip adds a bit of interest to your look while also keeping the hair out of your face. Functional & fashionable! For earrings, I say go as big as you want! I love these pearl drops for a bit of intrigue & design detail while still being very minimal. Pair with your favorite everyday lipstick & a fun pair of sunglasses & your look is complete!

Stepping Out

Typically, the items in my wardrobe tend to have the dreamy warm tones that I love so much, but I saw this dress & instantly felt inspired to create a lovely cool toned look. Maybe it’s the cooler weather, or the jacquard floral print, but either way, I couldn’t resist these cool toned vibes. In the moment when I was creating this outfit, I felt very out of my comfort zone. Looking back now though, I’m not sure why, because seeing these photos makes this look very much like me. This realization was further confirmation of my motto that if you’re questioning it…just wear it. Be fearless with your fashion!

Pop Of Warmth

Even though as we’ve discussed this look is very cool toned, I chose to mix it up & pair it with a very warm toned lip. This bright orange lipstick is one of my very favorites & I love how it looks with this outfit. It’s quite unexpected, but is a great pop of color in contrast with the blues of my look. A shade like this is great to have in your collection. It gives such a different look & feel to a typical red or pink lip.

Unexpected Shoes

So many different pairs of shoes would look just stunning with this look, but I decided to do a little bit of print mixing. Ginghams & florals play so well together, & since they were in the same color family, it was a perfect match. I love what a pop of print on your shoes does to an outfit. It’s that bit of extra detail that totally elevates your look.
